How Safe Is Your Racking?

Under the current legislation from the health and safety at work act 1974 and the provision and use of work equipment regulations 5 and 6 1998 all racks and shelving are required to have regular inspections and be in efficient working order. Vision Racking are qualified to undertake an inspection of your pallet racking and shelving. We can also produce a report that will identify any significant damage to your installation. The inspection will be carried out in line with the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) who are the trade body of the major racking suppliers in the UK. We are then able to provide the correct replacement components and skilled labour (who would be registered with SEMA) to undertake the remedial work. Only Dexion approved rack inspectors can verify the structural integrity of Dexion rack installations as Dexion retain all design calculations and method statements, and these are not available to third parties or inspectors not certified by Dexion.

If you cannot answer yes to all the questions in this list, you would benefit from a Vision Racking Ltd pallet racking or shelving safety inspection to verify the structural integrity of your rack installation:

• Is your racking regularly inspected?
• Do you have a documented report that identifies the extent of damage and the correct remedial action?
• Has any previously identified damage been repaired using the correct components?
• Do you know the maximum safe loading of your racking?
• Are the correct maximum load notices on display?
• Is sufficient racking protective equipment being used?

Failure to maintain all pallet racking and shelving equipment will result in downtime and potential accidents which in some cases could prove fatal.

Under current SEMA codes of practice the following statements are made:

On a damaged upright you are allowed up to 5mm left to right and 3mm front to back deflection on a 1m section.
Bracing on frames are also damaged when the uprights are hit.
Localised damage: - such as dents, buckles, tears and splits should be replaced immediately.

We will provide you with written details and locations of the damage identified including a summary and quotation of any new materials required to effect the repairs. Any ’high risk’ areas will be brought to your immediate attention.

We can then provide any new replacement materials required and can affect any repairs as necessary if requested to do so. A full written quotation would be provided with the inspection.
